We would like to say thank you to Pret-a-Portrait for capturing the essence of our school through a range of lovely website photographs. For more information please contact the School Office.
A huge well done goes to Lia Pymar who has got through to the next round of this national story writing competition.
We are very proud of the Millington and Gilks-Stokes boys. Since November they have been competing in the Royston Rockets BMX Winter Series.
They had to compete in at least four of five races for points towards medals and trophies. The last races were on Saturday. Olly Gilks-Stokes and Ben Millington competed in the Under 7 category and the final saw them both battling against each other for first place. It was a dead heat between them!
Sam Millington and Jacques Gilks-Stokes raced in the 8-10 year old category and impressively finished in the middle of the pack. Well done boys!
Congratulations to Jamie Jarvis for achieving his Chief Scout Bronze Award. Jamie has been awarded this to show that he has made friends, explored the outdoors and learnt about the world. It also meant that he successfully completed six Challenge Awards and four Activity Badges. The certificate was signed by Bear Grylls himself!
Cup Stacking Tournament
As you know there are many times when Sandon pupils make me very proud. One such occasion was this week when our Cup Stacking team entered a tournament. The team were amazing and came second.
The team included: Ruby, Cerys, Livvy, Mahalah, Emily, Dexter, Henry, Charlie C, Lewis, Jacques & Griff. Our subs were Lewis, Jacques and Mahalah. However, on the day Emily was poorly, so Mahalah took her place. One of the other schools was a team member short, so Jacques and Lewis helped them and became part of their school team. They were an absolute credit to Sandon.
Jacques said, “I joined another team with Lewis because they didn’t have enough players. They were nice and treated us like we were a part of their school and their team – I enjoyed it.”
Ruby said, “Our team did really well and everybody tried their best. We never knew we were going to come 2nd!! Mrs Reynolds was so proud of us.”
Jeremy came third in the recent Buntingford Swimming Club Championship (under 12s group) and achieved two second places and three third places in his individual races.
After being inspired by Mr Buky to build a bird box last term, Charlie designed and built his own over the summer holidays. He sent his designs to Blue Peter who awarded Charlie a Blue Peter badge. Well done to him!
On 27 May we had an extended swimming session to allow our junior children to try for their distance awards. Together they swam 1,259 lengths, which is 31,470 meters or 19.7 miles! Whichever way you put it – it is a fantastic achievement.
3 Pupils swam 10m / one width unaided, 42 out of the 45 swam 25 meters or more achieving their National Curriculum requirement, 29 swam a quarter of a mile or more, 21 swam half a mile or more and 4 pupils swam a mile each.
We are so proud of them all and wanted to share these brilliant statistics with you. Thank you children for your energy, determination and terrific fitness levels. Thank you, too, to our wonderful adult helpers who have been working hard with the children all year.
Children from Year 3 and 4 took part in a swimming gala and I am pleased to announce that they won….again! Congratulations to the team.
I spent the day with our HIP (Hertfordshire Improvement Partner) Linda Bird. The morning was spent observing lessons. This visit forms part of a yearly package of 3 visits. She was delighted at what she saw. Nothing less than good teaching was seen with some lessons outstanding. She was particularly praiseworthy of the children when she said, “The children at Sandon are an absolute delight, their behaviour is outstanding”. Our school has been placed in the highest rating band and later that day I was contacted by the head of Hertfordshire Strategic Lead for Primary schools to ask me to pass on my congratulations to all the staff and pupils.
Year 3 and 4 went to Freman College for the ever popular and exciting Swimming Gala to compete against other schools in the Buntingford District. They joyfully returned with the winning trophy. Congratulations to all the children involved and thanks to Mrs Reynolds, Mrs Wilson and all our supportive parents.
We are proud to announce that we have been awarded the Gold Award Sports Mark for PE. A huge thanks to Mrs Reynolds for her time and dedication and to all our children for their continued enthusiasm.
I am delighted to inform you that Mrs Brand has received a 5 star rating again from the Food Standards Agency. Our thanks go to her and Mrs Darton for their dedication to our school.
I received a letter from the Minister of State for Schools, Nick Gibb, just as we broke up for Christmas. He congratulated us on our results from last July. The letter is available to read here. We are very proud to be one of only 187 schools nationwide to reach such a high level of attainment.
Our athletics team represented the school at the district finals and we won!! A brilliant performance by the whole team was rewarded by FIRST place in the Very Small Schools section. Well done everyone!!
It’s Official; we can boast the BEST SATs RESULTS EVER!!!
We are pleased and very proud to announce that we have just received the best set of Key Stage 2 results we have ever had.
ALL our pupils attained Level 4+ in ALL subjects.

This is an excellent achievement for all of our children, but also a testament to the superb teaching that they have received.
Congratulations to Willow Marsden who has passed her Grade 2 recorder exam with distinction and Luke Bungay who passed his Grade 2 flute exam with distinction. Luke achieved maximum marks in one area, something his teacher, Ms Smith, has never seen before!
Congratulations to our swimming team, who achieved an amazing second place in the Buntingford and District Swimming Gala. It consisted of individual and relay races, with Sandon displaying great levels of teamwork, which was admired by the other competing schools.
A wonderful run by Jemima in The Cross Country County finals in St Albans saw her come in 48th out of a field of nearly 200! Her training with Di Shaw really paid off and we are all so proud of her performance. Well Done Jemima!
We are very proud to announce that 3 of our girls were selected for the North Herts Cricket Team under 11’s and came third in the Herts Youth Games. Well done to them.
Congratulations to Ella Buky, who has achieved a distinction in her Grade 1 Descant Recorder exam.
Congratulations to Lorimer Jenkins, who broke the 100m breaststroke record at the Hitchin Open Gala and now holds the Letchworth Club Champions record. He is competing at the Hoddesdon Open in January for a County place so we wish him the best of luck.
Congratulations to Adam Hazlewood, Buntingford Swimming Club Under 10s Joint Champion.
Congratulations to Jemima Walley and Lois Reilly, who recently achieved their Grade 1 LAMDA Duo Singing.
Congratulations to Eloise Pinnock, who achieved 8th place in the Off the Lead Rein Show Pony category in the Horse of the Year Show!
One of our pupils, Charlie Fancy, was joint 9th in the world on the test zone of Language Nut, an incredible achievement.
Outside of school Miss Moor races her dog Ozzie in a flyball team. This year her team won their division at the British Championship in Derbyshire. A week later she travelled to Belgium to compete in the European Championships which they also won, beating teams from, Spain, Holland and Poland. Congratulations to Miss Moor!
Congratulations to Gus Long, who won this year’s Moon Trophy, and PJ Marsden, who won the new Long Shield. A further award was presented by the Gallo family, for pupils who have given the most to the community, been friendly and true ambassadors for all this school stands for. This was awarded to Luke Howard and Matthew Haskings.
Congratulations to Mrs Bowden, who has achieved a 2:1 in her degree. We are delighted to say that she is now employed in our school as an ITT teacher and we wish her lots of luck in this role.

Internet Safety Poster Competition
Congratulations to all who entered the competition the standard was very high. Joint Winners: Charlie M & Jemima W
We are always keen to include more music and creative arts within our curriculum. Before half term, Thomas B represented our school in a Brass Day and year 5 and 6 joined our Network Schools at KTS for the Annual Music Festival.
Our year 5 and 6 girls represented Sandon at KTS. They played enthusiastically and improved as the tournament progressed. They only lost to the two teams that made the finals. Well done.
Ellen was lucky enough to have a football training skills session with the Arsenal Ladies training team. It was held at Hertfordshire Sports Village at Hatfield, on the campus of the University of Hertfordshire. It was a fantastic day and Ellen had the opportunity to learn whilst playing with other girls. She was really excited when she got to meet Ellen White and Kim Little from the Arsenal Ladies team.
