In addition to two weekly PE sessions, all our junior pupils have a weekly swimming lesson. 100% of our pupils achieve and exceed the National Curriculum requirement of 25 meters before they leave us (the National average is 50%).
National Curriculum Requirements
Pupils should be taught to:
swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
3 Pupils swam 10m / one width unaided, 42 out of the 45 swam 25 meters or more achieving their National Curriculum requirement, 29 swam a quarter of a mile or more, 21 swam half a mile or more and 4 pupils swam a mile each.
This is just one example of the magnificent swimming achievements our children have managed. Without the children's energy, determination and terrific fitness levels, this would never have been possible and we are proud of every child for what they managed.
Each term, we have an extended swimming session to allow our junior children to try for their distance awards. During a recent session, together they swam 1,259 lengths, which is 31,470 meters or 19.7 miles! Whichever way you put it – it is a fantastic achievement.
